Avery's life changes when she is invited to the reading of the richest man in Texas, Tobias Hawthorne's will. Avery has never heard of Tobias Hawthorne, but she attends the reading, not expecting to inherit basically his whole fortune. The only catch is that Avery must live in Hawthorne House for a full year- with all of the other Hawthornes who expected to inherit billions. Avery meets Mr. Hawthorne's four grandsons and finds out that he loved puzzles and games. Everything he left behind was a clue or riddle, and it is up to Avery and the boys to figure out what they mean.

Kaz Brekker, known better as "Dirtyhands", can pick any lock. This story takes place in Ketterdam in the 17th century. Kaz is a criminal, but more importantly, a genius, He finds himself in a bad situation and the only way out is to break into the Ice Court and rescue a scientist who has a secret serum that could destroy the world. If he can do it, the prize is an enormous sum of money, but the risk is as well. Kaz decides this is his only option so he starts assembling a crew. His crew is full of criminals, magicians, and fighters who are all outcasts, but specialists at their own different things. This book twists and turns in a crazy fashion, and tells a really amazing story.

The only problem is that the villains are real too. The twins need to get home as fast as possible. But how?
